How Much Does Local SEO Cost in 2026?
An agency retainer usually runs $500 to $2,000 a month. Here's what you get for that, what a freelance writer costs instead, and what doing it yourself takes.
Local SEO is the work of getting a business found when people nearby search for what it does. What it costs depends on who does it and how much of it they do. Here are realistic numbers for each option.
Agencies: $500 to $2,000 a month
Ahrefs surveyed 439 SEO providers about their pricing. The most common monthly retainer was $501 to $1,000, and 68.8% of providers charged $2,000 a month or less. Hourly work most often ran $75 to $100.
For that, a local SEO agency usually handles some mix of:
- Writing content for your website
- Managing your Google Business Profile
- Building links from other websites
- Fixing technical problems on your site
- Reporting on your rankings
What's included varies a lot. Ask exactly how many pages they'll publish each month and who writes them. Some retainers include a couple of posts; others are mostly reporting.
Freelance writers: $50 to $175 a post
If what you need is content, a freelance writer costs less than an agency. Recent rate surveys put a 1,000-word blog post at roughly $50 to $175, depending on the writer's experience.
The total depends on how often you publish. A post a week at those rates is about $200 to $700 a month. A post a day is $1,500 a month at the very bottom of the range. You'll still need to choose the topics, brief the writer, check the facts and publish each one.
Doing it yourself: free, but not cheap
Writing your own posts costs nothing but time. A useful local post, one that answers a real question with real detail, takes most people one to two hours, plus the time to decide what to write about.
That's manageable for a while. It's hard to keep up in the busy months, which is usually when it stops.
What's worth paying for
Whichever option you choose, the spending that tends to pay off is:
- Content that answers the questions customers ask before they buy, with your area in it
- Enough of it, published steadily, to cover the questions people actually search
- A way to see whether it's working: where you rank on Google, and whether AI assistants like ChatGPT name you
Be wary of long contracts, guaranteed rankings (nobody can honestly promise a position) and reports that don't say what was actually done that month. If you're weighing content against everything else, start with whether a blog helps a local business rank.
Where Rankside fits
Rankside is $49 USD a month, plus applicable tax, for one website. It writes and publishes an article to your site every day, tracks up to 25 Google searches every Monday, checks your Google Maps position across your area once your listing is linked, and asks ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini whether they name you.
It doesn't manage your Google Business Profile, reply to reviews, build links or run ads. If you need those, an agency is the right call. If what you need is the daily writing and a clear view of where you stand, Rankside is free for 7 days: we take your card to start and charge nothing until the trial ends. See pricing.
